What Voice Therapy Helps With
Voice therapy helps adults improve vocal comfort, clarity, and endurance. Our speech-language pathologists use evidence-based techniques to assess your voice, identify the cause, and create a focused plan for improvement.
Hoarseness or Vocal Fatigue: Roughness, breathiness, or loss of clarity from strain or illness.
Vocal Nodules, Polyps, or Muscle Tension Dysphonia: Voice changes caused by overuse or excess tension. Therapy restores healthy voice use.
Vocal Cord Dysfunction (VCD): Breathing difficulties from abnormal vocal cord movement. Treatment retrains breathing and relaxation.
Neurological or Post-Surgical Changes: Voice differences linked to Parkinson’s, neurological conditions, or medical recovery. Therapy builds strength and clarity.
Voice Modification: Training to develop a voice that feels natural, comfortable, and sustainable.

Changes in your voice can happen for many reasons. Some are temporary, while others may require professional support. Voice therapy can help identify the cause and restore healthy vocal function. Common causes include:
Medical or surgical procedures affecting the larynx (voice box)
Hormonal changes
Smoking or exposure to irritants
Talking or singing for extended periods
Frequent coughing or throat clearing
Neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease
Vocal cord paralysis
Benign vocal fold lesions (nodules, cysts, or polyps)
Excess muscle tension in the throat
Age-related changes (presbyphonia)
If you’ve noticed your voice sounding hoarse, weak, or different from usual, a voice evaluation can help determine what’s going on and how to treat it safely.

Your first session focuses on understanding how your voice is functioning and what may be contributing to your symptoms. We’ll review your medical history, observe how you use your voice, and have you complete a short questionnaire about your speaking habits.
During the assessment, we may record your voice and use specialized analysis tools to measure pitch, loudness, and overall quality. These results guide us in creating a personalized therapy plan tailored to your needs and goals.
Speech therapy focuses on restoring your voice to a healthy, efficient level that supports your daily communication. Because everyone responds differently, your plan will be adjusted as you progress to ensure the best results.

If your voice has been hoarse or breathy for more than two weeks, it’s important to be evaluated by an otolaryngologist (ENT). If your doctor recommends voice therapy, our team can help you get started and answer any questions during a free consultation.
Voice therapy helps reduce hoarseness and improve vocal quality, strength, endurance, pitch range, and loudness. Your speech-language pathologist will guide you through evidence-based exercises and techniques to help you use your voice comfortably and efficiently again.

Vocal cord dysfunction (VCD), also known as paradoxical vocal fold motion (PVFM), occurs when the vocal cords close during breathing instead of staying open. This can make breathing difficult and is often mistaken for asthma. Diagnosis is typically made by an otolaryngologist (also known as an ENT specialist).
Common symptoms include:
Wheezing or coughing
Throat tightness
Hoarseness or voice changes
Stridor (a high-pitched sound when breathing)
Shortness of breath or difficulty inhaling
Our speech-language pathologists use specialized breathing, relaxation, and voice techniques to reduce symptoms and improve breath control. Therapy focuses on restoring efficient breathing patterns and easing throat tension so breathing feels more natural and comfortable.

A quiet or weak voice is often one of the first signs of Parkinson’s disease. Speech and memory changes may develop over time, but early voice therapy can make a meaningful difference in communication and quality of life.
At Connected Speech Pathology, we offer personalized therapy programs tailored to each individual’s unique goals. Treatment often focuses on improving loudness, inflection, and clarity of speech, as well as attention, memory, and problem-solving skills.
Our speech-language pathologists are certified in evidence-based programs such as Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT LOUD®) and SPEAK OUT!®. We also integrate tools such as Expiratory Muscle Strength Training (EMST), SpeechVive, and other supportive software to help individuals with Parkinson’s disease communicate more clearly and confidently.

Voice therapy and voice coaching both focus on improving how you use your voice, but they serve different purposes.
Voice therapy is a clinical service provided by licensed speech-language pathologists. It’s designed to treat medical or functional voice concerns such as hoarseness, strain, vocal fatigue, or loss of range. Therapy helps restore healthy vocal function and prevent injury through evidence-based techniques.
Voice coaching is a non-medical service that focuses on performance, style, and expression. Coaching may be used to enhance public speaking, acting, or singing skills, or to support gender-affirming voice goals once the voice is healthy and stable.
At Connected Speech Pathology, our speech-language pathologists provide both types of support, helping clients recover from voice difficulties and refine their vocal skills for professional or personal growth.
-
A referral isn’t always required to begin voice therapy, though it may be needed for certain types of treatment. During your complimentary phone consultation, we’ll review your situation and advise you on whether a referral is recommended.
If you’ve already seen an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist or another physician, we’ll gladly coordinate care and include their recommendations in your therapy plan.
-
The initial voice evaluation is $175 and includes a comprehensive assessment of your voice and communication goals.
Ongoing session fees start at $75, depending on the session length (30, 45, or 60 minutes). Connected Speech Pathology is a private-pay practice and does not bill insurance directly.
