Online Accent Modification Training
Accents make each of us unique, but sometimes an accent can be a roadblock to effective communication.
When non-native speakers learn a new language, they may face challenges because each language has unique speech sounds.
For example, someone born in Iowa and learned to speak English as a first language will often sound different from someone born in Germany and who learned English later in life. Success in business, academics, and many other aspects of life require clear pronunciation. While variations in communication styles from different geographic locations are celebrated and embraced, they can sometimes lead to communication breakdowns. Achieving a new accent can be very rewarding, and it can be surprisingly easy for most people to learn with practice.
Clear communication helps professionals create rapport and deliver information with ease and efficiency. We help people express themselves with more clarity—especially when the pressure’s on.
If you feel like your speech is not easily understood due to a dialect or accent, we can help.
Accent modification goals often include:
→ Clarity of communication
→ Naturalness of speech
→ Reduce frustration
→ Increase confidence
When we teach accent reduction, we do not want to eliminate or diminish someone’s cultural identity.
Rather, we facilitate the improved production of an American English accent to promote clarity of speech and enhance self-confidence. Our focus is helping our clients speak with more naturalness, fluency, pragmatics, voice, and resonance so they can be more easily understood in the workplace as well as within the community.
A certified accent modification instructor with a master’s degree in speech pathology is the most qualified accent specialist to help with your communication concerns.
Speech-language pathologists are communication experts. It is natural for us to work with individuals who would like to reduce an accent. We have a deep understanding of speech anatomy and physiology and a strong phonetics and articulation background. With our knowledge and experience, we can quickly determine each person’s unique needs and identify the primary areas to focus on during training.
Online Evaluations & Treatment From the Comfort of Your Home
THOROUGH ASSESSMENT
Our assessments are client-centered, meaning that we will take the time to listen and determine personal goals concerning accent reduction. We will record, listen and transcribe productions of all or most of the critical sounds of American English.
CUSTOMIZED GOAL & PLAN
You will receive an individualized accent counseling program based on the results of the analysis. After the course, we will conduct a second analysis to identify the percentage improvement in your accent near the end of your program.
EFFECTIVE TREATMENT
Our online accent modification classes are private, one-on-one, and are typically held weekly for 1 hour each but can be modified to meet your needs and schedule. We will create a one-of-a-kind curriculum that is unique to your situation.
-
Accent modification services are best suited for those who speak English as a second language at an intermediate to advanced level of proficiency and speak English confidently. You do not have to be a native English speaker to change your accent.
-
As a part of your assessment, you will record words, sentences, and speech samples. We will phonetically transcribe and analyze your speech to identify your sound deviations from American English & speech patterns, using this information to establish your unique goals.
-
In accent modification training, the focus will be on articulating consonants and vowels unique to English. We expect clients to attend all accent counseling sessions and practice diligently (approximately 1 hour per day) to maximize outcomes. Clients who practice daily and attend all classes can expect to attain clear, understandable speech. Typical improvement rates vary from 50% to 70% and depend on each client's time and practice invested in the program.
