Early Intervention Speech Therapy

Children develop at varying rates.—some children learn to speak sooner than others. We help parents and caregivers know what to expect in terms of speech and language development in young children.

Concerned about your child’s communication (or lack of)?

If your toddler is not communicating effectively, it can affect their ability to learn and play with others. For this reason, it’s essential to seek help as soon as the problem is discovered. If you are questioning if your child’s language skills are delayed, then you should talk about it with your child’s pediatrician and seek the assistance of a speech-language pathologist for an early intervention program.

Parents often think their toddler will outgrow their speech delay and believe it’s okay to have a late-talker.

In some instances, that is possible, but in most situations, that is not the case. Don’t wait to get valuable help for your toddler. The longer you wait to address the developmental delays, the more significant the impact on your child and the time commitment needed to improve your child’s skills.

Through early intervention speech therapy, we can show parents and caregivers what to do and say, how to talk and listen to their toddler.

You don’t need to put aside a particular time to teach new communication skills to your child. Your child can learn new skills from you during all the activities you do together during the week. Therefore, you may be much more likely to see an improvement in daily family functioning.

Traditional speech therapy provides approximately 30-60 minutes of treatment per week. With parent coaching, you will have an opportunity to practice the techniques we teach you 50 times that number per week!

How to know if your child can benefit from an early intervention program:

Some red flags for delayed speech or language skills in a child’s development include:

  • Has not expressed first words

  • Not using two-word combinations frequently

  • Leaving ends off of words such as “ca” instead of “cat”

  • Says p, b, m, h, and w incorrectly in words

  • Does not follow or understand what you say

Parent Coaching Early Intervention Program

Step 1: Learn about your child’s communication needs.

We can explain your child's attempts to communicate in many different ways (e.g., facial expressions, hand movements, etc.) and how you can become more aware and responsive to their efforts. Understanding their communication can help your child communicate more effectively and help you better understand and respond to their actions.

We can help you identify your child’s stages of communication for understanding and expression. We will show you through parent-coaching what you can do to improve language skills right now — and what you can do to help your child learn next. We will help set achievable goals for your early intervention program and address your expectations.

Step 2: Learn how to interact, play, and read with your child to build language skills.

During your early intervention program, we will teach you how to integrate strategies into your day-to-day interactions with your child during play and while reading with your child. We can help you select both expressive and receptive language goals for your child that can easily be applied in different contexts.

We will show you how to incorporate these goals into your child’s favorite activities. We can help you pick age-appropriate books and toys to promote language skills. Finally, you will have the opportunity to practice the strategies with your child live during our sessions, or we can even record parent-child interactions, playing them back together. We can use the recordings as a tool in-between sessions to practice the strategies you have learned. The early intervention speech therapy activities that we design for your family are highly effective.
