Hoarseness (Dysphonia)

A hoarse or breathy voice lasting for more than two weeks may require an otolaryngologist's evaluation, also known as an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) doctor. If your ENT has recommended voice therapy, then we invite you schedule a free call so we can answer any questions you have!

Our program is designed to reduce hoarseness or improve voice, effort, endurance, pitch range, or loudness.

We have certifications in specialty areas of voice disorders. Voice therapy is about learning how to change your voice habits and finding your way back to your natural, powerful voice.

If your vocal quality, pitch, or loudness is affecting your ability to communicate effectively, then you may benefit from voice therapy. Treatment is also appropriate for those who experience frequent discomfort or pain when speaking or singing. Many of our voice clients are teachers, singers, attorneys, salespeople, and fitness instructors, as these occupational groups are at most at risk for developing voice disorders.

A variety of issues can lead to undesired changes in your voice.

Vocal Cord Dysfuntion (VCD)

Vocal cord dysfunction (VCD), also known as paradoxical vocal fold motion dysfunction (PVFMD), occurs when the vocal cords close during breathing when they should be in an open position. This obstructive pattern makes it hard for a person to breathe. VCD is often misdiagnosed as asthma. An ENT doctor diagnoses VCD.

Some symptoms of VCD include:

  • Wheezing

  • Coughing

  • A feeling of tightness in the throat

  • Hoarseness and voice change

  • Stridor

  • Shortness of breath

  • Trouble breathing in

Our speech-language pathologists can work with an individual who has VCD to improve the symptoms of VCD. Treatment for VCD focuses on a combination of relaxation techniques, vocal hygiene, and breathing exercises.

Therapy goals may include improving loudness, inflection, and clarity of speech. Attention, memory, problem solving, and executive functioning skills are also other areas commonly addressed.

We also work with Expiratory Muscle Strength Training (EMST), Speech Vive, and a wide range of supportive apps and software to improve communication skills in individuals with Parkinson’s disease.

Online Evaluations & Treatment From the Comfort of Your Home

THOROUGH ASSESSMENT

After your free introductory call, your speech therapy begins with a comprehensive evaluation and vocal analysis using state-of-the-art instrumentation (if you have hoarseness or VCD, you will meet with an ENT physician before this assessment).

CUSTOMIZED GOAL & PLAN

Connected Speech Pathology’s voice therapists have the training to provide the best therapy methods. All of our voice therapists have a deep understanding of the research of voice therapy techniques.

EFFECTIVE TREATMENT

A voice treatment program typically introduces how you can maintain a healthy, natural, sustainable voice. Voice goals may include teaching you how to modify your pitch, inflection, or tone.

  • Our assessment may consist of reviewing medical history, clinical observation, and questionnaires to look closely at your vocal use and behaviors. During the assessment, we’ll record your voice as you speak aloud. We will use our state-of-the-art vocal analysis instrumentation to analyze your pitch, loudness, and vocal quality and recommend a voice therapy program based on your personal needs and goals.

  • Your voice therapy goals will be focused on rehabilitating your voice to a level of function that allows you to fulfill your daily communication needs.

Since each client is unique and will respond to different therapy methods, we will create a treatment program tailor-made for your needs. We will choose the right therapy technique for you and adapt therapy depending on how you respond to a specific plan.

  • Our voice therapists at Connected Speech Pathology hold master’s degrees in communication sciences and have completed rigorous post-graduate training to provide the best voice therapy methods available. Our nationally certified team of voice therapists are experts in voice disorders and have a strong understanding of the research on various voice therapy techniques.

  • That’s a common question. We will strive to make every therapy session feel productive. The trajectory of voice therapy is different for each person, and there is no exact amount of time that applies to everyone.

Fees start at $75 per session, depending on each meeting’s length in 30, 45, or 60-minute increments. We are a private pay practice and do not accept insurance.
