Online Speech Therapy for Articulation Disorders in Children

Have you ever wondered if your child is saying their sounds correctly for their age? Does your child leave off the beginning or ending sound of words or substitute one sound for another?

Parents often think their child will outgrow their speech delay. In some instances, that is possible, but in most situations, that is not the case. Don’t wait to get valuable help for your child. The longer you wait to address the speech delay, the more significant the impact on your child’s speech.

Articulation & Phonological Processing

An articulation disorder occurs when a child makes sounds with incorrect placement, timing, pressure, speed, or coordination of the articulators. The result is a mispronounced sound, making it difficult to understand.

Phonological disorders are similar but occur when the child has trouble combining certain sounds used in communication.

There are many ways sounds can be misarticulated. Some speech errors are developmentally appropriate. However, others are not.

The best treatment for articulation errors and phonological disorders is speech therapy.

The Process of Articulation Therapy:

Connected Speech Pathology’s therapists hold master’s degrees in communication sciences and have completed rigorous post-graduate training to provide the best therapy methods available.

Our nationally certified team of speech-language pathologists are experts in pediatric articulation and phonological disorders. We have a strong understanding of the research on various articulation therapy techniques.

Generally speaking, speech pathologists think of articulation therapy as a systematic approach to master target speech sounds. We will use this systematic approach to teach the target speech sound(s). We will begin by targeting sounds in isolation, syllables, words, phrases, sentences, and finally, in connected speech. We will provide necessary cues (visual, verbal, tactile) for the proper placement of articulators (lips, tongue, teeth, jaw, and velum).

Since each child is unique and will respond differently to therapy methods, we will create a treatment program tailor-made for your child’s needs and adapt their therapy as needed. Home practice will be necessary to ensure carryover. We will strive to make every therapy session feel productive.

Online Evaluations & Treatment From the Comfort of Your Home

THOROUGH ASSESSMENT

After your free introductory call, your child’s speech therapy begins with a comprehensive assessment by a skilled speech-language pathologist (SLP) who is highly trained to identify articulation disorders in children.

CUSTOMIZED GOAL & PLAN

At Connected Speech Pathology, we believe that goals should be centered around your child and their communication needs. An individualized treatment plan for addressing your child’s specific articulation errors is then created.

EFFECTIVE TREATMENT

Since each child is unique and will respond differently to therapy methods, your child’s therapist will create a treatment program tailor-made for your child’s needs and adapt therapy as needed.

  • We have a variety of tools that we can use to identify your specific areas of need. They include standardized and informal tests and an assessment of the mouth’s physical structure and muscles used for speech. We will make the assessment process fun for your child. Speech-language evaluations may include a parent interview, including a review of your child’s developmental, educational (if age-appropriate) medical history, clinical observation, and interviews with the child and the caregivers. With a proper diagnosis, your child can receive articulation therapy to reduce or eliminate articulation issues.

  • At Connected Speech Pathology, we believe that goals should be centered around your child, family, and child’s interests. We understand the best, most engaging ways to work with children of all ages. Treatment goals will be set to create meaningful outcomes that achieve real-life improvement. With proper intervention, your child can overcome their speech problem and learn to pronounce sounds and words more clearly.

  • The trajectory of speech therapy interventions is different for each person, and there is no exact amount of time that applies to everyone. Typically, a treatment plan is established over 6-month increments. Sometimes articultion therapy can extend for longer periods depending on progress, diagnosis, and severity of the disorder. You can expect your child to participate in a re-evaluation every 6-9 months to determine if therapy goals need to be revised and monitor progress. Since each child is unique and will respond differently to therapy methods, we will create a treatment program tailor-made for your child’s needs and adapt their therapy as needed. Home practice will be necessary to ensure carryover.

Family-Centered Coaching

At Connected Speech Pathology, we use Family-Centered Coaching (also known as Parent Coaching) to show you what to do and say, how to talk, and listen to your child. Our speech-language pathologists are experts in working with caregivers and very young children (as young as two years old) using simple telehealth technology.

Learn more about our Early Intervention service for parents with children as young as two years old.

Family-Centered Coaching is a great way to engage parents and caregivers while interacting with their child in that family's everyday routines and activities. You don’t need to put aside a particular time to teach new communication skills to your child. Your child can learn new skills from you during all the activities you do together during the week.

While most very young kids are not yet able to attend to a therapist on the screen, some may be able to as they near preschool age. If your child is ready to engage with both the therapist and the parent, there are many ways to promote language development via online speech therapy.

Treatment goals will be designed for your family and will be meaningful to your lives. Therefore, you may be much more likely to see an improvement in daily family functioning. Traditional speech therapy provides approximately 30-60 minutes of treatment per week. With Family-Centered coaching, families can implement up to 50 times that number per week!

Fees start at $75 per session, depending on each meeting’s length in 30, 45, or 60-minute increments. We are a private pay practice and do not accept insurance.
